FAQs

Where are Thorn Wood tools made?

Our tools are designed and hand forged at Thorn Wood Forge in Hinton St George, Somerset. With the exception of collaborative products with other makers.

Are all your tools handmade?

Yes. Our axes, knives and forged tools are made and finished by hand. Small variations in forge texture, timber grain, leather and finish are part of the character of each piece.

Will my tool look exactly like the photographs?

Every tool is made individually, so natural variations should be expected. The overall design, materials and performance will remain consistent with the product description.

Are your products held in stock?

Some products are available from stock, while others are produced in small batches or made to order. Current availability and estimated lead times are shown on each product page.

How long will my order take?

In-stock products are normally dispatched within 3-5 working days. Made-to-order products have longer lead times, which will be shown on the individual product page.

Do I need to be over 18 to order an axe or knife?

Yes. Axes, knives and other age-restricted bladed products may only be purchased by customers aged 18 or over. On checkout OneID software will ensure all customers purchasing edged tools are 18+

Will I need to provide identification?

Age and identity verification may be required when ordering an age-restricted product. The courier will also require valid photographic identification before handing over the parcel.

Can an age-restricted parcel be left in a safe place?

No. Age-restricted parcels cannot be left unattended, on a doorstep, with a neighbour or in a parcel locker.

How much does delivery cost?

Delivery charges are calculated at checkout based on the products ordered and the delivery destination.

Do you deliver internationally?

We deliver only to the countries and regions shown as available at checkout. Restrictions surrounding axes and knives vary, so some products or destinations may not be available.

Can I return an order?

Eligible products purchased online can be returned in accordance with our Shipping & Returns policy. Products made to your individual specification or clearly personalised may not be eligible for change-of-mind returns.

What happens if my order arrives damaged?

Contact us as soon as possible at admin@thornwoodforge.com. Include your order number and clear photographs of the product and packaging so we can assess the problem.

Are Thorn Wood tools covered by a warranty?

Thorn Wood-made tools are covered against faults in materials and workmanship. Normal wear, poor maintenance, accidental damage and misuse are not covered. Read our Warranty page for full details.

How should I care for my tool?

Keep it clean and dry, protect the steel with a light coat of suitable oil or wax and store it away from moisture. Timber handles and leather sheaths will also benefit from occasional conditioning. Read our Care Guide for more information.

Can you sharpen or repair my tool?

Contact us with photographs and a description of the issue. We will assess the tool and advise whether a repair, sharpening or rehandling service is available.

Do I need blacksmithing experience to attend a course?

No. Our courses are suitable for complete beginners and you will be guided through every stage by the Thorn Wood Forge team.

How many people attend each course?

Course places are limited to a maximum of eight participants, allowing plenty of direct guidance and hands-on forge time.

How do course payments work?

Courses are secured with a non-refundable deposit, with the remaining balance taken 30 days after booking. Full details are shown on the course product page and in our Course Terms and Conditions.

Can you accommodate dietary requirements on courses?

Please contact us after booking to tell us about any allergies or dietary requirements.

Do you take bespoke commissions?

We occasionally undertake bespoke tools, collaborative projects and specialist commissions. Contact us with an outline of what you have in mind and we will let you know whether we can help.
