Care Guide
Thorn Wood tools are made to be used. A little regular care will keep yours performing properly for years to come.
After use
Remove any dirt, sap or debris, then dry the tool thoroughly. Apply a light coat of suitable tool oil or protective wax to the steel before storing it.
Never put a wet or dirty tool inside its sheath.
Sharpening
Maintain the original edge using suitable hand-sharpening stones or files. Work slowly and remove as little material as necessary.
Avoid high-speed powered grinding unless you have the appropriate experience. Excessive heat can damage the steel.
If the edge is heavily chipped or damaged, stop using the tool and contact us for advice.
Timber handles
Keep timber handles clean and dry. If the handle begins to look or feel dry, apply a small amount of boiled linseed oil or suitable handle oil, then wipe away any excess.
Do not soak the handle, place it beside direct heat or coat it with varnish.
Always inspect the handle before use. If the axe head becomes loose or the timber develops a significant crack, stop using it.
Leather sheaths
Remove dirt with a soft brush or slightly damp cloth and allow the leather to dry naturally.
Apply a small amount of beeswax or suitable leather conditioner when needed. Do not dry leather beside a fire, on a radiator or using direct heat.
Storage
Store your tool somewhere clean and dry. Before long-term storage, clean the tool, dry it thoroughly and apply a light protective coating to the steel.
Do not leave carbon-steel tools inside damp leather sheaths, as trapped moisture can cause corrosion.
Before every use
Check that the handle, tool head, cutting edge and sheath are secure and free from significant damage.
Only use the tool for its intended purpose. Do not use it for throwing, levering or striking unsuitable materials.
