Course overview:
Day 1:
The day kicks off at 09.30 with teas and coffees while you are introduced to the estate and the Thorn Wood Forge team. Following that, we will get straight on with our axe project! We start by forging the eye before moving onto shaping the blade, with the Forge team guiding you every step of the way! We will break half-way through the day for lunch, which will be provided, and by the end of the first day, all the forging will be done and you will have an axe shaped block of steel! The hard days work will be followed by dinner all together, prepared by our incredible cook, Alex.
Day 2:
The second day starts off at 09.30 with heat-treating the axes. This is where they turn from an axe shaped piece of steel into an axe! Following this the blades are ground to a sharp edge and it is almost ready to use! The final step is handling the axe. Handle blanks are provided, made in-house out of ash, from you which you can shape the handle to your preference and fit it to your axe head. Lunch is also provided and the day will run through until 17.00.
Day 3:
During your day of axe use and instruction you'll learn how to safely use your new axe to make a woodland mallet, hazel tent pegs, a kettle hook and spatula from green wood. Making these important items from local materials on site means you don't need to carry them with you! You'll also learn how to efficiently and safely split large and small fuel wood for the fire as well as create kindling and even tinder from standing dead wood; a valuable wet weather fire lighting technique. Finally, your new skills will be put the test as you are challenged to create fire with your axe, one seasoned log and a fire steel or spark stick!
We can cater to allergies and intolerances so please contact us with any dietary requirements upon booking.
