Overview
Experience a jam-packed day at Thorn Wood Forge where you will be taught the traditional skills of blacksmithing. You’ll be guided through forging an all-steel foraging knife and firesteel during the day. These simple tools are perfect beginner projects - no previous experience is required.
Our aim is to equip you with the knowledge and skills to not only make the tools, but also how to use them on your adventures.
The course is hosted by a team of professional Blacksmiths and Bladesmiths at our Forge on the Hinton Park Estate, Somerset. Spaces on the course are limited to 4 people to achieve a 2:1 ratio of students to instructors. This allows for maximum contact time with the professional blacksmiths, so you get the most out the time spent here at the Thorn Wood Forge.
The course will run from 09:30-18:00.

Course overview: The day kicks off at 09.30 with teas and coffees while you are introduced to the estate and the Thorn Wood Forge team. Following that, we will get straight to work in the Forge, getting the fires hot and working on our first project of the day, the firesteel. This will give an understanding of the forging process and basic heat-treating, before we break for lunch.
The afternoon will be held back in the forge to make your own foraging knife! These will be made from high carbon steel and the expert team will guide you through the forging, heat-treating and grinding, to finish the day with a working tool, sharp and ready for use!
